A filmmaker pulls back the curtain — because the right questions lead to the right person for your wedding day.
Why This Conversation Matters More Than You Think
Hiring a wedding videographer is one of those decisions where you really, really want to get it right — because unlike a florist whose arrangement wilts after a week, or a caterer whose food gets eaten and forgotten, a filmmaker's work is something you'll live with for the rest of your life. That's a big deal. And the best way to make sure you're hiring the right person? Ask good questions.
I've been on hundreds of inquiry calls with couples over the years, and I always love the ones who come prepared. Not because it makes my job easier (though it does), but because it tells me they take this seriously — and that means we're already starting from the right place. So here are the ten questions I think every couple should ask, and the kinds of answers that should make you feel confident.
Questions 1-4: The Practical Stuff
1. How long have you been filming weddings? Experience matters, but so does style evolution. Ask to see recent work, not just a greatest hits reel.
2. Will you be the one filming my wedding, or do you send associates? This one is huge. Some companies book you with one person and send another. Always clarify who exactly will be there on your day.
3. What happens if you get sick or have an emergency? Any professional filmmaker should have a backup plan — a trusted colleague who can step in. If they can't answer this confidently, that's a flag.
4. How do you handle low light situations like dim reception halls or candlelit ceremonies? A seasoned filmmaker will talk about specific cameras, lenses, and techniques. Vague answers mean limited experience — and New England venues can be notoriously tricky with lighting.
